Soccer Mom Smokey Eye

I am not a mom, and I've never played soccer, but I do love a good smokey eye, and the majority of my friends are moms. From what they tell me, they still want to look - and, most importantly feel - sexy, but whenever they do their makeup in such a way that makes them feel like cool moms and not regular moms, they get dirty looks from other moms.

I won't pretend to understand why moms are SO FREAKING MEAN to each other, but I can help with the "Soccer Mom Smokey Eye" - meaning you'll look sexier than normal but can still to go soccer practice without (too much) drama.

Just do me a favor - whether or not you're a parent, please remember that makeup is supposed to be fun and make you feel amazing, and remember what Elanor Roosevelt said: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

What You Need:

  • Around 5 minutes
  • Eyeliner or an eye shadow stick in a dark color
  • Eye shadow
  • Pencil brush

What to Do:

  1. Line the top lashes with liner or shadow stick - it doesn't have to be perfect, just make sure there's no gap between the color and your lashes
  2. Smudge into the lash line with pencil bush, use excess on brush to gently smudge on outer third of lower lashes
  3. Dip your brush into the eye shadow, and go back and forth in small strokes over the liner on upper and lower lids

Make sure to curl lashes and add several coats of mascara, and you're good to go.

A couple of things to keep in mind: if you have a ton of lid space from anatomy, a hooded lid or mono lid, you might want to add a little bronzer or medium eye shadow in the crease area just to break things up visually.

Also, I typically use contrasting shades of liner/shadow stick and eye shadow. So for example if I use a plum shadow stick, I'll use black eye shadow. If I use black liner, I'll use a navy eye shadow. You can use the same shades, but I like the dimension from two shades. Just play around!

I've filmed a short tutorial below, but if you want something involved, THIS is where I first found the inspiration for this look a few years ago.

And so...

HAVE FUN with this. Remember that people love you, not your makeup. And if they don't like it, maybe find new friends. -JY
