Surgery

IMG_7582.jpeg

Since this is a makeup/skincare blog, one might assume this post is about cosmetic surgery.  It's not.  I'm sharing this because, even though it's is far too much oversharing for me, my chiropractor encouraged me to do so.  I truly hope you get something out of this, whether it's to become your own best advocate, to keep fighting even when things are nearly unbearable, or simply to remember to take care of you. I danced for 17 years, but stopped due to what doctors told me were some herniated discs and general wear-and-tear.  I was told the debilitating symptoms should disappear if I picked up another activity.  You must understand that at that point, I was having take-your-breath-away back spasms, in physical therapy twice a week, and on my way to an amazing college dance program on scholarship.  To stop dancing cold turkey was completely devastating and, though I continue to give myself ballet classes, I miss it greatly every day.

My constant buddy - a giant ice pack on my hip

Fast forward a few years later.  I'm married and have started running.  Though it took a while just to run a mile, I eventually was up to 20 miles a week and was beginning to feel a bit of the freedom and endorphin rush I experienced while dancing.  Only one problem - what I thought was just shin splints began forming into an unusual, searing pain, so I did the whole rest/ice cycle for a while.

Eventually, it got to the point where I couldn't walk without a limp, so I reluctantly headed to the doctor.  Even though I expressed that there were several symptoms beyond what was happening below the knee, I was sent to a podiatrist. When he couldn't help, and two rounds of physical therapy actually made things worse, I headed back to my primary physician as I believed the pain was coming from my hip/lower back and ending up in my foot.  He dismissed me as having "lady troubles."  I switched to a female physician, but she said I must be nuts and threatened to put me on anti-psychotics. Big mistake here - I should have gone straight to a specialist.  Hindsight...

Puppy snuggles make icing the hip much better :)

Thankfully, I met with a specialist and, after X-rays and tests with giant needles, this Harvard-trained orthopedic surgeon told me I had exertional compartment syndrome and was in danger of losing my left leg below the knee.  While the validation was great, that wasn't exactly what I had expected to hear.  The problem with compartment syndrome is that the surgery has only about a 50% chance of a full recovery, so we wanted to try to avoid that by exploring other options first.

Now, a year and a half later, I've been seeing a chiropractor who has literally put the broken pieces of my body back together using Active Release Therapy (or ART).  We were able to avoid  surgery for the compartment syndrome and, after working out all the wonky issues, we realized that a structural imbalance was causing the comaprtment syndrome.  My doc pinpointed the pain to my hip and suggested an MRI for a possible labrum tear.  I have two.  And serious impingement issues that have caused me to walk (and dance and run) out of balance for years.  Bingo.

So in a few days, I'm having hip surgery.  And the prognosis is really, really good.

This whole process has spanned over four years.  It has been a constant battle, obviously physically because the pain has been so bad I see stars, but also mentally.  Additionally, at the beginning of this journey, they told me to completely stop working out (for the first time in my life...even yoga was too much) until we figured out what was going on.  I did not adjust my diet, so I gained 30 pounds.  Part of it was my fault as there was a lot of emotional eating, but that pushed me to learn everything I could about how our bodies use food. I'm proud to say that I've dropped about 20lbs just by (dramatically) changing my diet.  I'll share more about that at a later time.

The SWEET shower bench I'll need post-op

Again, the point of all this is to encourage you to be your own best advocate, as well as to educate yourself as much as you can about your health, your job, or whatever else your life touches.  If something isn't right, and you know it in your gut, fight to figure it out.

This journey is far from over, but it has been so humbling to this point.  I've learned the true meaning of gratitude, and I've become a more compassionate person.  I'd like to say that I could have learned these imperative lessons without becoming heartbroken, overweight, hopeless, frustrated, or experiencing a whole host of negative emotions, but I don't think I can.  It's like building muscle - when we work out, we break down our muscles so the body can repair them to make them stronger.  Everyone in life faces these "break down" moments - the ones who just survive it stay the same, while those who push through the tough stuff come out stronger.  To put it another way, I've heard the saying, "you can get bitter, or you can get better."

promise this isn't turning into a play-by-play of my surgery and recovery! I'm taking next week off, but I have some great posts to follow that are all about makeup.  There will be plenty of updates on Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat/Periscope if you'd like to follow along.  Until next time...cheers!

Welcome to 2016!

IMG_7723.jpg

Hello again! It feels like a only few short weeks was forever ago.  I truly hope you had a wonderful holiday season, and that you're refreshed and ready to tackle 2016.

So before Thanksgiving, I hinted about two announcements. The first is that we're moving back to D.C., but there's still a lot up in the air - when we'll move, where exactly we'll live, etc. - so that one isn't very cool.

{favorite decorations}

The other, though, is that I'm having hip surgery in a few weeks. After 17 years of ballet, my body is falling apart and, after four years of many different injuries and treatments, we've finally traced everything back to my hip. This is great news, and, as one of my doctors says, my life is about to "change radically" in a good way.  I'll go more in-depth on this topic later in the month.

What it means for my business, and for this blog, though, is that I'll have to take a little more time off.  To prepare, I'll upload several posts in advance but if I go missing, it's because I'm choosing to focus on healing and rehab - and I'll be back!

{Tradition: A making whoopie pies from scratch}

The blog will also be going through some changes as I will offer new types of content because - let's get real - I won't physically be able to schlep all the stuff necessary to produce a post for a while.

{New tradition: shortbread reindeer}

But I also want to make sure you're seeing content you want, so get a hold of me on social media - @ElectraLane or ElectraLane on Facebok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Periscope, and search "Electra Lane Channel" on YouTube - to let me know what topics interest you.  You'll also see real-time updates and shenanigans on those formats, especially Snapchat, so please follow me there.

{this happened}

I hope you've enjoyed my photos from the holidays - it was definitely a memorable season, and I am beyond ready to start the new year.

P.S. Be on the look out for the year's first Friday Flash on YouTube!

What I'm Thankful For - 2 of 2

image2.jpg

Last week, I shared a few things I’m thankful for. Before I get to the rest, though, I want to take a moment to also share that next week's post will be the last for the year so I can gear up for 2016.  Next year will bring several big changes which I'll get to January (I'm NOT knocked up!), but they will force me to change up the blog's format a bit.  I'd like to stay in touch over the holidays and beyond, so make sure to follow me on Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook, as well as Periscope for live makeup demos - my handle is @ElectraLane on all formats. On to the favorites!

  1. Bioderma

image1 (1)

Makeup is awesome, but you have to take it off at some point.  Although I've tried many makeup-removing wipes, some Bioderma on a cotton pad thoroughly cleans my skin without any irritations or breakouts.  And as much as I wish I washed my face and did a mask every night, on the nights when this is all I can squeak out, I don't wake up with wrecked skin.

2. Chocolate Cake

image1

I have a deep, undying love for chocolate.  So does my husband - he's the only person I know who loves chocolate as much as I do.  I eat a little piece of dark chocolate most days but, if I could, I would have a piece of chocolate cake with chocolate filling and chocolate frosting every day.  My favorite recipe is the Hershey's Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate Cake (unless you use something else for the filling, I highly recommend making a double batch of the frosting).  Serve with a giant glass of whole milk.

3. Candles from The Little Market

FullSizeRender

If you around 30, you might be slightly obsessed with Lauren Conrad from Laguna Beach and The Hills.  I've always felt like she and I could be friends...anyway, LC has an amazing company called The Little Market and its mission is "to empower women artisans to rise above poverty and support their families."  These candles smell incredible, they don't give me a headache, and they last: I've burned the one pictured above every day this month for about four hours each time, and it's still going.

4. Becca Cosmetics x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop Shimmering Skin Perfector

The thing that deters me from most illuminators is the fact you can see them, which defeats the purpose of creating a subtle, from-within glow.  At least for my skin tone, this is the perfect highlight because it’s light and sheer – until the light hits my skin.  It's also stunning on the shoulders and collar bone!  You can see it in action HERE.

5. Dr. Bronner’s Castile Liquid Soap

brush2

This is what I use for my monthly makeup brush bath – my favorite scent is almond - but it's also an incredible multi-purpose item for uses that range from washing your face to mopping your floors.

6. The Ivanka Trump Newsletter (sign up on the website)

IT

This website, just over a year old, is unlike any other blog/website/etc. I've visited before - so much so that I've signed up to receive her weekly newsletter.  It's filled with advice and tips in a modern, upbeat and concise manner, and I actually look forward to it each week.  This week, Ivanka and her her team showed us what's in their work bags, aptly titled The Spill, so I was inspired to spill my own everyday bag in the upcoming Friday Flash (search Electra Lane Channel on YouTube, or follow THIS link on Friday).

7. Wayne Goss The Brow Set

FullSizeRender (2)

Filling in your brows with an angle brush is like flying down a mountain filled with switchbacks in my 2010 Honda Civic.  Filling in your browns with with these bad boys is like taking the same switchbacks in a Lamborghini.

8. NARS Sex Appeal Blush

sa

Ever the wordsmith, NARS also knows how to make flawless blushes.  Not one who likes to bring attention to my cheeks, I do love how much life a little flush brings to one’s face, so I’m glad to have finally found this.

9. Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

_5781077

The last thing you want is to wake up Christmas morning looking like Rudolph, so for that disgusting, cystic pimple that comes out of nowhere, I keep this on hand.  This stuff isn’t a miracle, but it’s the best product I’ve found that destroys the zit without drying out the skin around it.

10. Urban Decay All-Nighter Makeup Setting Spray

IMG_3126

…or any of UD’s setting sprays.  Not only will this spray keep makeup in place throughout your New Year's Eve party, but it also gets rid of the heavy look of any powder sitting on the skin.

And, of course, I'm so thankful for you!  Best wishes for a lovely Thanksgiving, and I'll see you Friday on YouTube.

Trick or Treat (Yo Self)

image1-2.jpg

This weekend is HALLOWEEEEEEEN! As noted last year, I'm not the type who gets all fancy with the makeups on Halloween - some glitter and fake lashes make me happy.  I love Halloween because it's the official start of the Holiday Season, and I couldn't be more excited.

This year, I'll be a ballerina princess for two reasons: 1) who needs an excuse to dress up like a ballerina princess? and 2) I've been working with an amazing organization, called The Tutu Project, that helps men and women offset the costs associated with fighting breast cancer that aren't covered by insurance.  What's so remarkable about this organization is that one of the co-founders is still undergoing breast cancer treatment herself.  Check out the website and, if you feel compelled to donate (even $1 helps!), you can do that HERE.

And to see the ballerina princess makeup, be sure to follow me on Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook, all under ElectraLane!

So on to the tricks...

While I may not get all into Halloween glam, here are some videos showing those who do:

  1. Kandee Johnson's Edward Scissorhands, Marilyn Monroe Painting, and all of her Everyday Disney Princesses are incredible inspirations, as well as her ideas for kids' costumes
  2. Byrdie.com rounded up three lovely tutorials by MAC makeup artists
  3. My favorite looks are those from makeup artist Shonagh Scott's #HappilyNeverAfter series.  You can follow her on Insta @ShowMeMakeup.

Finally, you should treat yourself to the new NARS Audacious Mascara.  It's the best mascara ever.  While in NYC, I stopped by the NARS store to pick up a tube, but they were sold out (because it's that good).  So the lady gave me a sample tube.

And it's mind-blowing.  You can see a demo HERE.

It's super black.  It coats every. single. lash.  It doesn't flake.  My lashes are still soft.  It's buildable without getting gunk-y or clumpy.  It's incredibly lengthening.  And, this is really important, when you're ready to remove it, it slides right off.  Perfection.

I hope you have a fun and safe Halloween!

Travel Hacks - Part II

IMG_5076.jpg

A few weeks ago, I shared some of my beauty packing tips.  Since we were extra tight on space, I picked up a few tricks along the way, so here's a follow up to my previous list.

Pack a collapsible tote

image1

With my skincare and makeup split into two separate bags thanks to airport security standards, it was a bit cumbersome to carry everything to the bathroom we shared with our suite mates.  In the future, I'll keep my Baggu tote handy so I can toss everything in there upon arrival.

Utilize a bag-within-a-bag

IMG_4793

When traveling carry-on only, I'll keep a smaller in-flight ready bag inside my clear, TSA-approved liquids bag to slip into the seat pocket in front of me.  The hydrating serum, hand sanitizer, and under-eye masks, all within reach instead of in the overhead compartment, went a long way in keeping me fresh upon arrival.

Do the best you can with what you have

...because it's not about the makeup, it's about the experience!  I applied my makeup en route on a very bumpy road.  My best work? Nope.  But I really don't remember the look because I had such an amazing time on our trip.
