Beauty Blog Behind-the-Scenes

It’s like The Godfather…just when you think you’re out, they pull you back in.

Turing Electra Lane into a business rather than a hobby is no small task, just like any startup, including those relying in part on Instagram for PR. Insta keeps jerking the rug out from under creators, and with the new mandate to compete with TikTok, creators must fall in line or lose exposure even to loyal followers.

Sounds crazy and harsh, but it’s true.

Can anyone explain the disparity in two, basically identical reels?! Sigh.

Can anyone explain the disparity in two, basically identical reels?! Sigh.

I won’t bore you with the details, but this pertains to you for two reasons. One, you might not see your favorite accounts populating your feed anymore, meaning you’ll have to manually search for them (just to get to the page and see they posted 5-6 times and you missed it). Two, please be patient with me and other creators as we’re continually trying to get our footing while creating beneficial, valuable content!

SO, this week’s blog has been turned on its head, but I wanted to give you an under-a-minute tutorial. Please let me know if you like these “shorts,” or if you prefer long-form videos.

Also, sign up for the newsletter called the Electra Lane Extra! It’s the monthly newsletter showcasing top blog posts, a free makeup lesson, and a beauty Q&A.

Thanks for letting me vent. We’ll get there! Now, on to the tutorial…

Three years ago I had LASIK eye surgery after wearing contacts and glasses for 15 years, so this week was my yearly eye check-up and I had to run errands after. Since the drops they put in my eyes make my mascara run, I decided to skip it all together.

The big caveat here is that I have great eyelashes thanks to genetics. If you're someone with light eyelashes you might want to add a thin coat of waterproof mascara for this look, otherwise, the eyeliner trick we use well make it seem like you have something on your lashes.

What you don't see in the video is that I use the Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner that's super long-wearing and waterproof along with the Bobbi Brown eyeliner brush. Then I take a small smudge brush - unfortunately they don't make it anymore but anything small will work -  and use a dark eyeshadow (Punk by Urban Decay) to blend and smudge eyeliner deep into the base of my lashes and slightly up on the eyelid.

This technique works beautifully and lasted throughout not only my eye appointment, but also the rest of the day. It’s great for the beach or pool, too. Give it a try and let me know how it works!
