Happy Valentine's Day!

alt-image.jpg

Valentine's Day is happening in a few days, and it's my second favorite holiday (only after Christmas). I decorate for it, I have a special Valentine's wardrobe, and I'm in a good mood for weeks because this wonderful holiday brings to mind all the things I love and am grateful for - not just romantic love. There are also some beauty products that I love, and I'm sharing them with you in the video below. These are products I use almost daily, and many of them I've used for several years. I hope you find something new to try, and enjoy your Valentine's Day! See you next week...<3

Post-Sweat Hair Refresh

products.jpg

For the first time, I want to share a little love with one of my most favorite, and at the same most frustrating, topics: hair. After a million missteps and years of trial-and-error, I can hopefully save you some time by learning from my mistakes. Please note that I have zero formal training in hair, and know that my hair is fine but there's a lot of it, it's very straight, very flat, very heavy, and very slippery (meaning no texture). When you combine all of that with not wanting to wash and heat style your hair every day and an almost daily workout routine, you're just asking for a mess.

(Random note: today is the one-year anniversary of my hip surgery, so I'm super excited to share that I can even work out hard enough to get this sweaty! Yay!!)

After a run across the river and back the day after I spent forever washing and blowing out my hair, this is what my hair looked like (and yes, I'm aware that it looks like a mug shot!):

Frizzy, flat, and stringy.

Here's what I did:

Dry It

With the high speed/cold air setting, dry all the sweaty hair. Brush it out to make sure it's tangle-free and there's no moisture left.

Dry Shampoo

Be generous with the dry shampoo, focusing on the roots, to get rid of any goo and add lift. I love this one because it's available everywhere and is unscented.

Curlers

I take it back to the old school and place plastic rollers just around the crown. On the low speed/low heat setting, I blast each roller just for a couple of seconds. If you're in a hurry, follow up with the cold air setting to lock in the lift. At this point, I like to let everything set while I do my makeup.

Smooth

On the lowest heat setting, I take large chunks of hair and quickly slide my straightener over them. This just helps to smooth the flyaways as well as iron out any kinks from having my hair up during the workout. I repeat this with the hair in each roller, too.

Fluff

Remember how I said my hair was flat? I like to sprinkle in some of this lightly scented powder to maintain body throughout the day.

Hydrate

I add a drop or two of dry oil to the ends of my hair to revive and condition.

Final Result:

Not as good as a fresh blowout, but it works for me. Here's the before/after:

Evening Skincare Routine

IMG_0397.jpeg

It's time for bed. You're exhausted. The last thing you want to do is wash your face, so you just go to sleep.  No big. But you get into this routine, and start to notice that your skin is looking dull, your pores are large, you have little wrinkles around your eyes, and your face dropped what seems like a few inches. Oh, and there's a huge zit on your forehead.  No pun intended, but this is your wake up call that you need a solid nighttime skincare routine! It sucks, but I promise if you push through, you'll wake up to bright, plump skin. I've finally found a great routine that works for my skin, and I rarely wear foundation any more. Remember the basic formula:

Cleanse

Tone

Serum

Eye Cream

Moisturizer

Lip Balm

This might excite you, but this might feel like one. more. thing. you have to do in an already overstuffed day. If you're the latter, remember that the most important thing in skincare is a routine - meaning something you can keep up with - and you can't form a routine if you feel overwhelmed. At the very least, invest in a good cleanser and a good moisturizer. Keep that up every day and every night, and you will see results!

Here's what I do to my skin every night. Occasionally I'll add in a mask or peel if I need it, but usually I just stick to this. Enjoy, and I'll see you next week!

Morning Skincare Routine

am-skin-FI.jpg

Good morning! I'm a morning person (who appreciates a good sleep-in every once in a while). But even if you relate more to my puppies Clark and Kent...

...a quick a.m. routine will wake up your skin and keep you looking fresh all day.

I think any solid, anti-ageing skincare routine includes masks, chemical and/or manual exfoliation, and following this basic pattern (day or night):

Cleanse

Tone

Serum

Eye Cream

Moisturizer

Lip Balm

It also takes a lot of trial-and-error as well as giving your skin what it needs - which might be different seasonally, monthly (think: hormones), or even daily. I like to think of my array of serums, masks and treatments as a medicine cabinet - you don't need flu medicine for a headache, just like you wouldn't use a chemical peel on already irritated skin that needs some TLC.

Let me say, too, that the products that work for my skin might not work for yours. I've been at this for a long, long time (When I turned 10, the *exact* thought I had was, "Well, I've hit double digits. Better start taking care of my skin." Not joking.), and I know how my skin works and I can tell what "mood" it's in. What I'm here to share is 1. a great foundation upon which you can build your own routine, and 2. hopefully introduce you to some new products.

Next week I'll share my nighttime routine, but for now, please enjoy this #IWokeUpLikeThis moment!

#QuickNEasy || Product Review

QNE.pdf

Sooo as a PR/Marketing person, I need to take a moment to say that maybe the whole campaign slogan,

"Are you a #QuickNEasy girl?"

has some...inappropriate...connotations, am I right? Like, I don't think I would have gone with that one. But that's the only negative I have about this line because it's awesome.

I love solution-based products, and the Quick 'N' Easy Makeup kits from Charlotte Tilbury are just that. For $75, you get 4-5 deluxe sample and full-sized products and a cute makeup bag. I'll give you a quick rundown of the kits, then share my take.

Natural Glow

c/o Beautylish.com

The Natural Glow kit is the best value because you get five products, three of which are full-size. Add some concealer and brows, and this is a perfect everyday look for most skin tones.

Daytime Chic

c/o Beautylish.com

Not really sure the purpose of this kit since it's basically the same tones as Natural Glow, but you don't get a lipstick (even though the beach stick is good for eyes/lips/cheeks), you only get two full-sized products (worth $67), and it's the same price. I'd say skip this one.

Red Carpet Party

Another three full-sized products, but no mascara. Still a decent value because the lipstick, lip liner and eye pencil are $76 on their own.

Smokey Eye Evening

c/o Beautylish.com

With three full-sized products worth $81, this is the second-best value, and it's a great "desk to disco" kit, as Charlotte calls it.

My Thoughts

The true value of these kits is that they eliminate your need to think about what products to use, and the corresponding YouTube videos show you how to apply the products. These kits are a great intro to the line and, if you have some Christmas cash to burn, I would definitely take the Natural Glow kit. That said, while I adore Charlotte Tilbury products for the great ingredients and very high quality, you would still be in great shape viewing the videos and creating your own kits with products you already have.

Another option (that I own!) is the limited-edition Instant Look In a Palette. Also for $75, you get three eye shadows, two blushes, a bronzer and illuminator.

This is my go-to palette when I travel, and word on the street is she's coming out with more shades.
